About Pilates

The Pilates Method of body conditioning is a unique approach to mind/body fitness. Developed by the late Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920’s, this system of exercise was for many years a well kept secret of the dance and fitness communities, esteemed for its ability to build a strong yet lean body without the strain of long, repetitive workouts.

Today, the technique is utilized in a wide variety of body conditioning applications. Fitness enthusiasts, elite level and professional athletes appreciate the controlled, precise, total body conditioning they receive from Pilates. Physical therapists and sports medicine practitioners value the injury prevention and rehabilitative attributes of the method. Pilates is a system of exercise that can be adapted to each individual regardless of age, gender, or level of fitness and is suitable for anyone looking for and effective and safe workout.

The key principles in the Pilates Method are control, concentration, centering, fluidity, precision and breath. All six principles are applied in a controlled series of rhythmic, balanced movements designed to increase flexibility and create long, lean sculpted muscles without building bulk. Emphasis is placed upon “core conditioning”, i.e. the strengthening and stabilization of the muscles surrounding the spine and abdomen in an effort to create a balanced body that is agile and structurally sound.

About Kristy

Kristy Goldstein, owner of Sixth Street Pilates, has been teaching Pilates since 1999. She originally received her Pilates Certification from Body Arts and Science International under the supervision of Master Teacher Rael Isacowitz. She also holds a Certificate of Completion of the Core Intelligence Course offered by Master Teacher Marie-Jose Blom of Long Beach Dance Conditioning.

As a former competitive gymnast, Kristy connected instantly with the Pilates Method. She began her study of Pilates in 1997 at Riverside Community College with Body Arts and Science International instructors Jo Dierdorff and Kathryn Scarano. While in the process of completing the prerequisites for the nursing program, Kristy decided to try a Pilates class. After just one class she was hooked, and one class soon became many. During a lapse in her nursing studies she successfully completed her Certification in Pilates and she has never looked back. Upon completion of her Certification, Kristy was asked to become an adjunct faculty member within the Dance Department at Riverside Community College. She enjoyed teaching Pilates to undergraduate students at RCC and then opened Sixth Street Pilates in Riverside, California in 2001.

Kristy continues her Pilates and related movement therapy studies by attending yearly continuing education courses and workshops and by continuing her own personal exploration of Pilates in private sessions and mat classes. She is a professional member of the Pilates Method Alliance and the IDEA Health and Fitness Association, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Integral Liberal Arts from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California. Teaching Pilates has become the perfect career for Kristy, allowing her to harmoniously combine her love for acrobatics and anatomy.

Kristy is very passionate about teaching Pilates and loves to help people become more aware of their bodies. Kristy respects the traditions of classical Pilates, and appreciates the understanding that more contemporary applications of Pilates have lent to the Pilates Method as a whole. Kristy brings a smile and a positive energy to every session and class and strives to offer each client a beneficial and enjoyable experience at her studio.
